It’s wonderful to see musicians live in a venue where you can really get up close! Aynsley Lister from the UK performed in Switzerland, at the Gaswerk Eventbar in Seewen. It wasn’t Zürich or another big Swiss city – it was the small, quiet town of Seewen, far from the larger metropolitan areas.
Arriving on time, we grabbed a beer to get into the concert mood. The venue filled up nicely. I’d estimate around 140 people came to see the show – so, pretty much packed. I had a great (seated) spot in the small upper tier, which allowed me to notice a lot of details.
Right at 8:00 pm Aynsley Lister and his band started. What an amazing opener with “Everything I Need” – a first-class blues rock blast. The groove filled every corner of the club. What stood out after a few songs: live, the man plays much harder than on the studio recordings. If you compare it to his current album Along For The Ride, it becomes very clear.
Tracks like Home, Hurricane, Broke, Fallin’ Down, and Hyde 2612 were just fantastic to hear. Lister gives his songs room to breathe and expand. His 🎸 is never about self-indulgence but always serves the whole soundscape. With a trio, the interplay really has to work. There’s no “safety net” – what you hear and see is what the band can do. And yes, Aynsley Lister and his band definitely can!
The “cherry on top” was the track “Purple Rain” by Prince. A cover – but so brilliantly played. I’m sure the legendary Prince applauded this version from above. 👏
Overall, the sound was mixed pretty well. The guitar of the master was up front, as it should be. I personally would have liked the bass and vocals a bit more prominent in the mix. One must know, Aynsley Lister has a pleasant voice. Still, it didn’t really detract from the experience.
With one encore track, when they returned to the stage, the fantastic concert came to an end. 100 minutes full of energy. The paying audience rewarded it with thunderous applause. I’m sure everyone will come back when Aynsley Lister returns to the area.
Postscript: After the concert there was a chance to have albums signed by the artist – which I of course did. A photo with him was another highlight of the evening. Oh yes, this likable guy just gained another fan…!
